3 Reasons to Bring Your Child to Therapy

How do I decide when to bring my child to therapy?  Should I wait and see if this gets better?  Learn three reasons to call a therapist.

when to take your child to therapy

Most parents have wondered about the well-being of their child on quite a few occasions. Determining when your child is showing normal growing pains and when they need professional support can be a difficult task. Not every challenge requires the support of a therapist. Read on to learn three signs that it might be helpful to call in a professional.

1. A change in personality or behavior that lasts more than 3 weeks

Parenting can be a bit like whack-a-mole — as soon as you hit your stride, a new challenge arises. As children develop, it’s not uncommon to see temporary changes in behavior or personality. However, if a change occurs that doesn’t resolve in about 3-4 weeks and it’s causing distress for you or your child, it may be helpful to talk to a therapist.  A therapist will do a thorough assessment and make a recommendation about the type of therapy sessions that will be most helpful, often a combination of individual and family therapy.

2. Your child is talking about hurting themselves

While it may look like “attention-seeking,” any statement about self-harm warrants immediate attention.  This is a time where your child does need your attention.  The risk of self-harm is high when a child makes a statement like this.   Similarly, if you suspect your child is doing anything to harm themselves, from cutting to purging, call a therapist right away.

3. You’ve noticed a regression

Your child is fully potty trained and suddenly starts having accidents at school. Your child was mastering math and suddenly stopped doing schoolwork. If you notice your child taking a step back in development, either losing skills or acting younger in other ways, reach out to your child’s school, pediatrician, or a therapist to further assess. Temporary regressions are normal when there is a sudden change or stressor, but these regressions shouldn’t last more than a few days.
